Rødsand 2, Denmark’s 12th offshore wind farm, was inaugurated yesterday, bringing 90 wind turbines with a total output of 207 megawatts.

The new facility will produce 800 million kilowatt hours per year, and in the future it might provide as much as 200,000 homes with green energy.

The government plans to transform the country into one free of fossil fuels by 2050, and over the coming months it will devise a strategy for achieving the objective, according to Lykke Friis, the climate and energy minister, who did the ceremonial ribbon cutting yesterday.

The turbines of the newly opened wind farm have been supplied by Siemens. E.ON, the company that runs Rødsand 2, began construction on the wind farm in the spring of 2009.

The energy group operates onshore wind turbines in Europe and the US with a total installed capacity of more than 2,800 megawatts.

The company plans to expand its onshore and offshore capacity to 10,000 megawatts by 2015.

With the inauguration of Rødsand 2, the country’s offshore capacity rose to almost 720 megawatts, according to the Danish Energy Agency.

A new wind energy farm, Anholt, is set to go online sometime in 2012. This last project should be able to deliver electricity corresponding to approximately 4 percent of the country’s electricity production.
