The fight over the future of Spanish solar subsidies is hotting up after an industry group confirmed it will take the government to court over its decision to slash incentives for existing solar power plants.
Just before Christmas, the dire state of the national finances prompted the Spanish government to trim 30 per cent from a guaranteed subsidy for the country's solar energy generators, a fall of around €3bn (£2.5bn) over the next three years.
Investors and solar developers were incensed, claiming the move was illegal because the subsidies were guaranteed for 25 years when introduced in 2007.
Spain's Photovoltaic Business Association (AEF) has now followed up on last month's threat of legal action, confirming yesterday that it intends to challenge the government ruling in the country's Supreme Court.
