Better, greener, more competitive Europe

Environmental research projects across the EU are to get a €205m (£173m) leg-up courtesy of the European Commission.

The cash is part of a €6.4bn programme of investment in “smart growth and jobs” unveiled in Brussels today by EC innovation commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn.

"Investment in research and innovation is the only smart and lasting way out of crisis and towards sustainable and socially equitable growth,” said Geoghegan-Quinn. “This package will contribute to new and better products and services, a more competitive and greener Europe, and a better society with a higher quality of life.

“We are offering researchers and innovators €6.4bn for cutting-edge projects focusing on big economic and societal challenges: climate change, energy and food security, health and an ageing population,” she added.

More than €1.3bn has been devoted to research from the Seventh Framework Programme, and €205m is earmarked specifically for environmental research projects.
